This is something a bit different from my regular posts but since it annoyed me greatly I thought I should write about it.

I’m using my iPad quite often, especially for browsing the internet, sending emails and reading a lot of my study books. Really it’s a lot of pages. Also I’m using it often to view my Train Signal videos for which it works pretty well. Usually when browsing the Internet or writing some emails I use the landscape position. However, when reading books I’d love to read in portrait or vertical position.

Since I can’t really sit still I often use the lock screen button on the right side, just above the volume button. But now with iOS 4.2 Apple decided, in all their wisdom, to change this little button to a mute button. Apparently Apple is too lazy to press the volume button a bit longer to turn the sound off. Also there is no option in the settings to restore this button to it’s original setting. Instead Apple decided to change how you lock the screen.

If you double tap the home button you will see a bar slide out at the bottom of the screen. There you can slide the bar from left to right. On the left side you will find an onscreen button. If you press that button your orientation has been locked.

Personally I don’t think this is an ideal situation. In the next few weeks I’m going to try to get used to it, but if not I will try to restore to my previous iOS. Although I like Apple products for the most part, this kind of decision by Apple really irritates me.
